Our Story

Our synagogue began in 1978 as Chabad of La Jolla, when a small group of devoted individuals gathered in a private home to pray and celebrate Jewish life together.

As the community grew, so did its needs. After several moves, a remarkable opportunity arose in 1997: the Bank of America building on Governor Drive announced it would be closing. Without hesitation, the passionate members of Chabad seized the chance to acquire this beautiful space and create a permanent home.

Two years of tireless effort, fundraising, and community spirit brought that dream to life. The building was purchased and dedicated as the Chabad Jewish Center of University City.

Today, Chabad of UC stands as one of the most vibrant centers of Jewish life in San Diego. The synagogue offers a full spectrum of programming — from adult education classes and family events to men’s and women’s groups, daily services, and so much more.

Our Shabbat and holiday gatherings draw participants from across the broader community, creating a warm and welcoming environment for all.

Recently, Rabbi and Mrs. Leider welcomed Rabbi Effy and Doba Kahn as Assistant Rabbi and Rebbetzin. Their dynamic energy, fresh ideas, and engaging programs are already making a powerful impact on our growing community.

Meet the Leider's

Rabbi Moishe Leider was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. He studied at Yeshiva University in New York and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History. Following that, he spent a year in Torah Or Yeshiva in Jerusalem and continued his studies at the Lubavitch Yeshivah in Morristown, New Jersey. He was ordained by the Central Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York in 1977.

In 1976, Rabbi Leider married the former Sura Sandlow, and today they have eleven bright and wonderful children. His family originally came from Chabad in Los Angeles in 1977. In 1979, Rabbi Leider was invited to come to San Diego as the campus rabbi for Chabad House at San Diego State University—a position he held for about eight years. During this time, Rabbi Leider was very instrumental in involving many college students in rediscovering their Jewish heritage through Shabbat services and meals, as well as, social programs, Torah study sessions, and individual counseling. He was also appointed Jewish Chaplain to the jails and prisons in San Diego county, which he continues this day.

In 1986, Rabbi Leider assumed position as rabbi of Chabad of University City building the community up to a sizable proportion through innovative programs, stimulating services and dynamic classes.

Rabbi Leider hosted his own television program for over 12 years on public access cable and hopes to continue it in the future. Rabbi Leider is a certified MOHEL (qualified to do ritual circumcision) and a musician.

Mrs. Leider, originally from Los Angeles, is an extraordinary educator and storyteller who has been inspiring students for many years. She gives classes literally every single day—yes, really—and each one is filled with insight, warmth, and a touch of her trademark humor.

Beyond the classroom, Mrs. Leider leads a welcoming, open home that’s always filled with laughter, learning, and the comforting aroma of something delicious. As a proud mother of eleven, she somehow manages to balance it all with grace, energy, and genuine care for everyone she encounters.

Meet the Kahn's

Rabbi Effy and Doba Kahn moved to University City in the summer of 2025,

Effy grew up in Melbourne, Australia, where his parents run the biggest Jewish Youth organization in the Southern Hemisphere, known as Chabad Youth. After years of study in Yeshivot across Israel, Australia, and the U.S., he brings a down-to-earth, friendly energy to everything he does. Effy is known for his approachable personality, love of learning, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether teaching, sharing a good meal, or creating a meaningful moment, he brings warmth, humor, and depth to the experience.

Doba, a Los Angeles native, is the creative force behind many of our community’s programs and events. She has a natural way with children and a gift for making every gathering feel personal and special. From running engaging kids’ programs to planning beautiful community events, Doba adds her unique touch to everything she does—always with kindness and care.

The Kahn's were blessed with their adorable daughter, Chaya, who from a young age already runs the show—and is quickly becoming a staple at Chabad of UC.
